SCAM ALERT
This week, Giddings Police were notified about a scam where a male with a middle eastern accent is calling residents pretending to be a DEA special agent from El Paso. The caller tells the resident they have criminal cases for various felony charges but states the case could go away for amounts ranging from $3,000 to $10,000. The caller identified himself as "Stephen Collins", but when GPD officers contacted the DEA El Paso Field Office they confirmed the caller was not a real agent. The Caller then spoofed Giddings Police Department main number and spoke directly to a GPD Officer stating that he knew what he was trying to do was wrong but that was how he made his living. The caller ended the call by saying he would try not to call any Giddings residents in the future but could not make any guarantees.Giddings Police Department nor any other law enforcement agency will ever ask you for payment over the phone in exchange for "making a case go away" with prepaid credit cards or iTunes gift cards. If you receive any of these calls, hang up and call your local authorities.
