Excessive Heat Warning
Fayette County has been under an excessive heat warning for the last two weeks, and the trend is continuing. They are advising residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors and pets. Never leave Children and pets in vehicles and take extra precautions is working outside.In addition to the heat, the County is currently under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms beginning after midnight Wednesday and into the early hours Thursday Morning. Damaging winds and hail could be a possibility.
Know the signs of Heat Stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion:
Heat Strokes
- Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees F) taken orally
- Red, hot and dry skin with no sweat
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Dizziness, confusion or unconsciousness
If a heat stroke is suspected, call 9-1-1 or get the person to a hospital immediately. Cool down with whatever methods are available until medical help arrives. Do not give the person anything to drink.
Heat Cramps:
Muscle Pains or spasms in the stomach, arms or legs
Heat Exhaustion:
Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, fast or weak pulse, dizziness, headache; fainting, nausea, vomiting
If signs of heat cramps or heat exhaustion are visible, go to a cooler location and cool down by removing excess clothing and taking sips of sports drinks or water. Call a healthcare provider if symptoms get worse or last more than an hour.
