Grass Fires in Fayette County
Fayette County has recently had a high call volume of Grass fires and controlled burns out of control. We are asking everyone to use extreme caution and common sense when doing any controlled burns. We had good rain over the past few weeks and green winter grass is continuing to grow. The unfortunate thing is we still have a lot of dead dry vegetation left over from last year's growing season. In many cases dry vegetation is what is igniting and causing the fires to spread rapidly with these windy conditions. If you are planning on doing outdoor burning please be sure to watch it at all times. Try to remove or clear off any dry vegetation around the burn area. Have a hand tool or water hose just in case something flares up just outside the burn area. All citizens are urged to please use common sense when burning and are advised of the following:
-Begin Burning no earlier than one hour after Sunrise. Cease Burning the same day no later than one hour before sunset, and make sure that a responsible party is present while the Burn is active and the fire is progressing.
-If burning trash please have a water hose nearby.
-Do not burn in windy conditions.
-Have a safe zone around the burn.
-Do not leave burns unattended.
-If a burn gets out of control call 911 immediately.
If planning a controlled burn, please contact the Fayette County Sheriff's Department at 979-968-5856.
